RECIPROCITY AS A FUNDAMENTAL INSTITUTION OF SOCIAL LIFE AND ETHICS
RECIPROCITY AS A FUNDAMENTAL INSTITUTION OF SOCIAL LIFE AND ETHICS - Lecture and conversation with Ágnes Heller; Moderator: Christiane Voss © Presseteam Uni Innsbruck
The notion of reciprocity is at the center of the social philosophy of the influential Hungarian philosopher Ágnes Heller.
Whereas hierarchically structured communities were characterized by asymmetrical reciprocity, by retaliation and alliances against enemies, reciprocity under the rule of law is symmetrical. It finds its expression in institutions such as keeping one’s promises, telling the truth, mutual gratitude or loyalty. What is the significance, however, of the distribution of goods under conditions of symmetrical reciprocity? And can there be such a thing as reciprocal relations with future generations?
