Conference Announcement: Kunst. Kultur. Konflikt. – Art. Culture. Conflict.

Date: 17 and 18 May 2011
Venue: Deutsche Welle, Gremiensaal, Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse 3, Bonn
Art and culture both act in and react to conflicts. Art reflects, illustrates and provokes events of the day. At the same time, creativity is needed to overcome crises. It is within the dynamic field between culture and crisis that the mediators of German cultural and educational work and the development cooperation organizations are positioned and set their courses.
What opportunities and what risks are involved in cultural and educational work in regions of crisis and conflict? How can the various stakeholders better coordinate work among themselves and what new approaches can be developed from the interplay of the measures and formats located within different ministries?
The dynamics between culture, art and conflict are the subject matter of a conference that was held in Bonn on 17 and 18 May 2011. It was organized by the Culture and Development working group of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Deutsche Welle, the Goethe-Institut and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.
The conference was a continuation of the Bonn series of events on Culture and Development, which began in 2009 with the workshop The Union for the Mediterranean: Culture and Development from Rabat to Helsinki? and tied into last year’s symposium Culture and Global Development. It was being jointly planned by the mediator and implementing organizations for international cultural and educational policies and this year was realized under the charge of the Goethe-Institut.
The event began on 17 May with a public discussion panel of high-ranking experts. This was followed on 18 May with a professional meeting at which the participants could network and share in panels and working groups dedicated to specific issues.
The conference was for professionals in the cultural sector, educational practitioners and institutions working in the field of Culture and Development, for foundations, NGOs and social institutions, academics as well as policymakers from ministries, parliaments, and state and local governments.
