“Mauerreise” – the wall in the world project in the Palestinian Territories
The Goethe-Institut Ramallah has worked on the bricks in cooperation with the Department of Architecture at the Birzeit University. Project partners are architect Dr. Yazid Anani, who studied in Germany, and curator Vera Tamari, who runs the Virtual Gallery at the University and teaches visual communication.
Around 30 of her students have developed designs for the six bricks. Their brief was to put the German bricks into a context artistically with the Palestinian wall. In the second half of May, five students have worked on one brick at a time. At the end a jury has selected the bricks to be sent back to Germany, the other half will stay in Ramallah.
On 6th July the bricks were presented on the Birzeit University Campus and from 12th –19th July 2009 they were on show in the German-French Cultural Centre. At the end of July three of the designed bricks were transported back to Germany. An event will be held in parallel to the Berlin Mauerdomino with the three bricks remaining in Ramallah in November 2009.
