Born the son of a shoemaker in Berlin in 1933, Horst Buchholz became
the first German screen actor accepted outside Germany after the
war. At 15 he landed his first role in a Berlin theatre and his
breakthrough came in 1956 as a wavy-haired rebel in DIE HALBSTARKEN
(The Hooligans), soon to be dubbed the James Dean of Germany. In
the sixties his career took him abroad to Hollywood, France, Spain,
Italy and Britain where he worked with such directors as Billy Wilder,
John Sturges and Wim Wenders. He also worked with actors as Romy
Schneider, Heinz Rühmann, Peter Falk, Hildegard Knef and Mario
Adorf. His last major role was in Roberto Benigni’s LIFE IS
BEAUTIFUL.
“This film,” says director and son Christopher Buchholz,
“is the document of a tragicomic journey into the world of
my father, who did not enjoy talking about himself, a journey that
has brought me into contact with people and taken me to places that
meant so much to him.”
