WELCOME   WILLKOMMEN

The Goethe-Institut invites you to take a virtual tour of many of the sites in Washington's New Old Downtown that are related to German-American history here in the Nation's Capital. This Virtual Heritage Trail began as a contribution to the United States' and Germany's celebrations of the millennial year 2000.

Today, we are located in the heart of the 7th Street Cultural Corridor.

But in the 19th and early 20th centuries, this was also Washington's principal business and shopping district. Washington's German community had an enormous impact and presence here.

You are invited to stroll around the neighborhood, discover history behind the façades, and enjoy the evolving mixture of peoples, places, and styles that make the 7th Street Corridor the exciting place it is today.

  • Find out about German-American life in the 7th Street Neighborhood
  • See and hear virtual art works in the Virtual Gallery of Washington's Goethe-Institut
  • Keep up to date with the progress of the Adolf Cluss Exhibition Project and other joint programs with Washington's new City Museum at Mount Vernon Square
  • Let us know what you think!

With the addition of virtual tours of German-American sites in Chicago, IL and San Francisco and the Bay Area, Everywhere You Look has crossed the country. We thank you for your comments and hope you will continue to provide feedback and ideas.
