Gudrun Pausewang was born in Eastern Bohemia in 1928. After the end of the war her family fled to West Germany. She completed secondary school, attended teachers college in Weilburg and taught at various elementary schools. In 1956 she began a seven-year stint in Chile and Venezuela in Germany's foreign school service. After another stay in Columbia she returned to Germany permanently in 1972 and worked as a teacher near Fulda until 1989.
Since the mid-1970s she has published many books for children and teens, often critically examining social issues, for instance the threat of nuclear accidents ("Die Wolke", 1987). Her books have been translated into several foreign languages and have received many awards.
Gudrun Pausewang now lives in the east of the state of Hesse.
