Andreas Steinhöfel was born in Battenberg, Germany in 1962. After completing secondary school he began studying biology and English at university with the goal of becoming a teacher. He subsequently decided to take a degree in English and American studies and media sciences in Marburg. His first book for teens, "Dirk und Ich", was published in 1991, while he was still at university. His second novel, "Paul Vier und die Schröders" (1992), is one of his best-known works, and was filmed in 1994.
He was awarded the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 2009 for his book "Rico, Oskar und die Tierschatten."
In addition to writing books for young readers, he works as a translator, writes for radio and television, edits comics and reviews books for teens.
Andreas Steinhöfel lives in Berlin.
