Ursula Wölfel was born in Duisburg in 1922 and grew up there. She studied German in Heidelberg and completed a teaching degree after the Second World War. She then worked as a special education teacher.
In 1959 she published her first children's book. It was followed by additional successful publications including "Feuerschuh und Windsandale" in 1961 and "Die grauen und die grünen Felder" in 1971. She has devoted herself to her writing on a full-time basis since 1961, and now lives in the Odenwald region.
Ursula Wölfel has published numerous books for children and young adults that have received many awards in Germany and abroad. Her books have been translated into more than 15 languages. In 1991 she was honoured with a special Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis for her complete works.
