Rabet oder das Verschwinden einer Himmelsrichtung
Rabet, or the Disappearance of a Point of the Compass
Via-Verbis-Verlag, Scheidegg 1999, 256 pages
Rabet is a street at the edge of a ghost district that does not even appear on maps of Leipzig. [...] The realistically and ironically narrated stories here do not lack for feelings such as depression brought on because of friends under arrest, anxiety, opportunism, and pain at betrayal. The book describes the feeling of a revolutionary movement that emerges spontaneously among the people and the steadily increasing conscious participation of the main character. And therein lies the strength of Martin Jankowski’s novel: it is the words of someone who was there and who spontaneously took part in an epochal revolution that was shaped by simple strategies and improvised actions planned day by day.
