Warehouse421

Workshop with Stephan Koplowitz

Participants interested in performance are invited to attend the workshop and develop an understanding of the fundamental techniques in the production and creation of site-specific performances. They do not have to perform and can respond to all activities through writing.

Participants will be taught how to look at space from a variety of perspectives to create site-specific works inspired by the design, history, and context of the space. They will use the Warehouse421 physical campus and architecture as part of their creative research for developing short performance works. At the end of the workshop, we will have an informal presentation of the topics covered during the three-day workshop period.

Stephan Koplowitz is an American award winning director/choreographer known for his work on stage, film and creating original site-specific multi-media works for architecturally significant sites. His work over a period of more than 30 years aims to alter people’s perspectives of place, site, and scale, infused with a sense of the human condition and concerned with the intersection of natural, social and cultural ecologies within urban and natural environments.

Recent work includes, The Northfield Experience (2018), an immersive sited multi-arts/theater/dance event for the entire city of Northfield, MN, Mill Town (2017), a site-specific performance/installation for the historic mills, Lewiston, Maine, or Red Line Time (2013), a siteadaptive durational performance for LA Metro’s Red Line, commissioned by the Goethe-Institut.

Koplowitz creates films and interactive media performance works, including his ongoing project Revealed utilizing a room sized camera obscura and Learn, Capture, Repeat, an audience participation movement portrait event.
