Dresden and Madrid. In the 1970s. Two oppressive regimes, two resistance movements. But love, above all else, saves the day. Or exile. In any case, an uncertain future.

With Charlotte Gneuß and Christian Janssen-Déderix

Moderator: Anne-Lise Remacle

Charlotte Gneuß: Gittersee

1976, in the Dresden suburb of Gittersee: Karin is 16, looks after her little sister, and helps her rebellious grandmother, who mourns her days as a Blitzmädel, with the housework. Karin's father despairs of repairing his Škoda as well as his family life, and her mother would like nothing more than to lead a different life. Karin feels at home with her friend Marie, the only girl in her class who doesn't want to do something later, but become something: the first woman on the moon. And Karin is in love: with her boyfriend Paul, who would like to be an artist but works in the Wismut mine. When Paul goes on a trip and doesn't come back, two men in uniform show up at the door one night, and Karin's world is turned upside down.
In this haunting debut novel, Charlotte Gneuß tells of a world that no longer exists and of the question of whether innocence is possible.

Christian Janssen-Déderix: Au-delà de Madrid les oliveraies disparaissent

Severo is the son of a wealthy owner of one of the largest olive groves on the Guadalquivir River in Andalusia, and Lucha is the granddaughter of one of the estate's employees. A forbidden love. As the ravages of Franco's regime lay Spain in ruins, the two lovers decide to flee both family and political dictatorship. They cross the Pyrenees, travel through France, and settle in Belgium, in the Borinage, at the foot of a slag heap. Severo becomes a miner and Lucha a housewife to raise their children, who grow up between two cultures and struggle with all the academic and social difficulties that entails. While the first generation dreams of returning to their homeland, the second generation tries to put down roots where they live, and later, the third generation has nothing to do with their grandparents' nostalgia for their homeland. A tender family saga set against the backdrop of immigration.
