Europanetzwerk Deutsch

The German Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut promote the German language as a working and procedural language in the European institutions through the exclusive grant programme Europanetzwerk Deutsch. Various language course programmes and events on socio-political and cultural topics provide the opportunity to improve existing German language skills and to become part of a committed alumni network in Europe. The activities take place both on site and online.

Structural change as an opportunity?

Exhibition visit and discussion on 8 July 2026 at 6.30 pm at the Goethe-Institut Brussels.

The social transformation in the East following the fall of the Berlin Wall has many facets. It is evident in the restructuring of political structures, institutions and social conditions, and is reflected in people’s life stories and biographies. In the book *Vergessene Zukunft* (Forgotten Future), photographer Holger Herschel has captured the period of transition in several photo series; two of these – *Schwarze Pumpe* and *Altes Eisen* – are currently on display at the Goethe-Institut Brussels. In a moderated discussion with Holger Herschel and Dr Annette Schuhmann, we explore a process of transformation that often demanded a high degree of adaptability from people, whilst also addressing the question of the value and future of work in times of upheaval – then as now.
