This year, for the first time, a German cultural institution, the Goethe-Institut, has been invited to submit a nomination for the European Union Prize for Literature. The joint decision by representatives of the Literature and Translation Promotion Department at the Goethe-Institut and external jury members was made in favour of Deniz Utlu and his latest novel "Vaters Meer", which was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2023.

The novel, which has received much attention in Germany, tells the story of a difficult father-son relationship in a personal and sensitive way, reconstructing an archetypal story of migration that began in southern Anatolia in the 1960s. The Goethe-Institut's citation states: "With his novel 'Father's Sea', Deniz Utlu has succeeded in shedding new and different light on a chapter of our culture that still receives too little attention - Turkish immigration to Germany."

Deniz Utlu was born in Hanover in 1983 and studied economics at the Free University of Berlin and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His debut novel "Die Ungehaltenen" was published in 2014, followed by his second novel "Gegen Morgen" in 2019. Deniz Utlu is also the author of theatre plays, poetry and essays and conducts research at the German Institute for Human Rights. In 2021, he was awarded the Alfred Döblin Prize for an extract from "Vaters Meer". In 2023 he received the Bavarian Book Prize.

The EUPL is supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and is organised by the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF). It is awarded annually to up-and-coming fiction authors from Europe. The aim is to highlight the creativity and richness of contemporary European literature in the field of fiction, to promote the dissemination of literature within Europe and to increase interest in literary works from European countries. The award ceremony will take place during the Brussels Book Fair (4 to 7 April).

On the occasion of the award of the European Union Prize for Literature, the Europanetzwerk Deutsch as part of the Goethe-Institut, together with the Representation of the State of Lower Saxony to the European Union, invites you to a reading with Deniz Utlu on 8 April 2024 from 18:00 - 21:00 at the Representation of the State of Lower Saxony.
