How much will I learn during the course?

The amount of work and the number of sequences vary depending on the language level: At levels A1 and A2, the German Online Individual contains 54 sequences each with 60 open-ended writing or speaking tasks. Including the two online live sessions, the course comprises approx. 100 hours. At levels B1.1 and B1.2, the German Online Individual contains 27 sequences each with 30 open-ended writing and speaking tasks. Including the two online live sessions, the course comprises approx. 70 hours. At level B2.1, the German Online Individual contains 18 sequences with 21 open-ended speaking and writing tasks. Including the two online live sessions, the course comprises approx. 70 hours. At level B2.2, the German Online Individual contains 18 sequences with 32 open speaking and writing tasks. Including the two online live sessions, the course comprises approx. 70 hours. At levels C1.1 and C1.2, the German Online Individual contains 21 sequences each and between 20 and 23 open speaking and writing tasks. Including the two online live sessions, the course comprises approx. 70 hours.

When does my course start?

Your personal course starts within five days after registration and placement. We need this time to find a suitable online teacher for you.

How long does the course last and can I also do it in a shorter time?

You have 6 months access to the course, but you can also do it in a shorter time.

How many live online sessions will I have?

3 lessons of 30 minutes per course.

From what age can I take the course?

You can take the course from the age of 16.

Will I receive a confirmation of participation?

Yes, you will receive a confirmation of participation.

Is the placement test free of charge?

Yes. Before the course starts, we will send you a free placement test to determine your exact German language level. This way we make sure that you continue learning at the right level.

I have recently completed a course at the Goethe-Institut, do I still have to take the placement test?

If you have completed a course or exam at the Goethe-Institut in the last six months, you are welcome to send us a scan of the confirmation of participation or certificate instead of the placement test.

Do I have to take a placement test?

Yes, unless you have attended an appropriate course or taken an exam at a Goethe-Institut within the last 6 months.

Assessment test

Online assessment test
Do you have some previous knowledge of German but have never taken a German course at the Goethe-Institut before? Then you’ll need to do an assessment test before enrolling. Register by clicking on ‘Online assessment test’ .

How does the German Online Individual course work?

You start with the Goethe-Institut placement test and receive feedback from us on your current language level with a recommendation for the appropriate course level.

Your online course is divided into different chapters dedicated to everyday topics, for example at language level A1 "Getting around town" or "Everyday contacts". In each chapter you will get to know typical conversation situations, receive interesting information and texts, and practise the appropriate vocabulary and helpful grammar structures. You learn and practise with different formats such as reading texts, matching exercises, short films, writing tasks and much more. This not only brings variety and fun, but also quick learning success.

For communication and speech training, you meet with your online teacher in two live online sessions per course at individually agreed dates. You practise speaking freely in German and train your feeling for the language.

Your online teacher will support you during the learning process by e-mail. The support includes corrections and feedback on your written and oral contributions and, of course, answering your questions about the learning content. In this way, you are optimally supported in your self-learning!

Working independently

Learn independently with everyday and varied learning materials on our learning platform. You can flexibly arrange the online tasks and receive automated feedback.
Live sessions

In the two virtual live sessions you learn with your teacher. We use the conference tool ZOOM, with which you learn online just like in a face-to-face course. You train your speaking and receive individual feedback from your teacher.
Supervision

During the course, the online teacher will give you regular, individual feedback on speaking and writing exercises. If you have any questions, you can contact our language course office at any time.

The number of lessons that are usually required to reach a certain level and take the corresponding Goethe certificate are based on experience. Individual aspects such as language learning experience and native language also play an important role. We will grade you before the start of the course in order to ensure optimal learning success.
