SCHOOL OF HOPE (FI/FR/MA/US, 2020, 78')

Over the past decade, climate change and over-cultivation have forced the nomadic tribes of Morocco’s High Atlas Plateau to become sedentary. Many have gone to live in cities, but often only encountered misery. The other option is to stay, to settle permanently, which means organizing the future, starting by building a school. A tribe on the edge of the desert decided to fight to stay on its territory and give its children an education. A hopeful situation that has its own issues: when children are at school, they cannot work alongside their family.

Mohamed El Aboudi is a Moroccan filmmaker with an MA in Film and Television from Bond University, Australia. He has directed dozens of short documentaries for television, including a few EBU co-productions that have been broadcast in 12 European countries. His documentary 'Dance of Outlaws' (2012) has won several prizes in international film festivals.

The European project Halaqat is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. Halaqat is co-funded by the European Commission (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar.
