In 2020, the Science Film Festival reached more than 800,000 viewers in 28 countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East from October 1 to December 20. In light of the Covid 19 pandemic, many screenings were held virtually with more than 200,000 online views. The Science Film Festival focused on the Sustainable Development Goals in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, presenting 92 films from 24 countries as the official selection in 2020.
In 2021, the Science Film Festival will be held from October 01 to December 20 at the international level, inviting viewers to see the best of international science communication. Against the backdrop and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, health and mental well-being are more important than ever. As such, Science Film Festival 2021 is organized under the theme of "Better Health through better Understanding" with a particular focus on health and mental health.
Goethe-Institut Äthiopien in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education, Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, the Children’s Science Center, respective government bodies and their network of public, private and international schools will host the Science Film Festival 2021 from mid-November till 20 December 2021 in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
Public and semi-public screenings of over 40 films appropriate for young students, youth and the general public will be held throughout the city, with some events accompanied by a range of activities that complement the festival. Although Addis Abeba will be the primary location for the festival, Goethe-Institut Äthiopien will communicate with partners outside of the city to make the festival accessible to a wider audience within the country and region.
The films selected for Ethiopia will have English subtitles and dubs. Furthermore, a selection of eight multipart films suitable for children and teenagers will be dubbed in Amharic.
Since film screenings and most other festival activities will be held in physical format, Science Film Festival 2021 will be delivered as per potential COVID-19 protocols of the time.
