Connect-Reconnect

ConnectReconnect Goethe-Institut Georgien

Initiated by the Goethe-Institut in Georgia, the exhibition Connect–Reconnect marks the culmination of an artistic exchange developed in collaboration with the master’s program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts. The project brings together thirteen artists based in Tbilisi and Berlin, working across sound art, performance, and time-based media. The final works – many developed through long-distance collaboration – are now presented across the Goethe-Institut building.

20.03,-22.03.2026 (17:00-22:00), Goethe-Institut Georgien (Zandukeli Str.16)

During  the artist residency in October 2025, the participants spent a week in Kutaisi, Tbilisi and Tskaltubo, conducting research. This shared experience remains a collective reference point and resonates as an undercurrent in the performances and sound installations that emerged. With a distinct focus on sound and listening, the works also incorporate sculptural elements, video projections, and text to explore interconnected and overlapping questions that persist.

Reflecting on memory and loss, preservation, decay, and renewal, many of the works explore how water, plant life, buildings, and streets hold cultural history and personal experiences. They express a shared curiosity about how certain sounds and emotions become stuck or trapped, whether for a fleeting moment or across decades. Here, there is an implicit fascination with what can still be heard in objects and places that have fallen silent, and with the implications of their reanimation.
This exploration of sound and silence also emerges in several inquiries into liminal spaces, whether encountered in public realms or within the body. Furthermore, speech, text, dreams, and fantasy are examined for their roles in navigating different cultural spaces, possible and impossible relationships, power dynamics, harmonies, and disruptions. These themes are all considered in relation to natural, designed, and virtual environments -particularly how they are mediated through the senses and internalized.

Activating spaces across the building - from the courtyard to the rooftop - the works unfold in resonance with one another, tracing how sound reveals subtle tensions, forgotten fractures, and fleeting intimacies. In this exchange, listening emerges as an act that gathers what has been dispersed and restores connection across thresholds of time and place.
