Organisations supporting displaced and at-risk artists

Unterstützung für gefährdete Künstler*innen in Osteuropa

How can safe spaces be created for artists and cultural workers in times of displacement, censorship, and political pressure? The ARTERIA Report by the Goethe-Institut Athens provides the first comprehensive overview of initiatives supporting vulnerable and displaced artists in Southeast and Eastern Europe.

Based on intensive research in six countries, the study by experts Irini Vouzelaki and Svetlana Mintcheva sheds light on the challenges, needs, and potential of an often invisible but essential ecosystem of cultural solidarity.

A central component of the study is a digital map of “Safe Spaces for Endangered Artists”: It highlights organizations, residencies, and networks that enable protection, exchange, and continued artistic work—thereby strengthening their connections and resilience. It also offers the opportunity to add new structures and locations.

Discover the report and explore the map: a dynamic tool that provides orientation, creates connections, and opens up new perspectives for supporting artists in vulnerable contexts.
