In an unnamed country, on the first day of the New Year, people stop dying. There is great celebration and people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity: eternal life. Soon, though, the residents begin to sufer. Undertakers face bankruptcy, the church is forced to reinvent its doctrine, and local 'maphia' smuggle those on the brink of death over the border where they can expire naturaly. Death does return eventualy, but with a new, courteous approach – delivering violet warning letters to her victims. But what can death do when a letter is unexpectedly returned?

José Saramago (1922-2010) was a Portuguese novelist, playwright, and journalist, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998. Born into a rural, working-class family, he later became a prominent voice in Portuguese literature and a vocal critic of social and political issues. His works, often characterized by their unique style and exploration of historical and social themes, earned him international recognition.

José Reis was born in Vila Real, Portugal, and graduated with a degree in liberal arts, majoring in philosophy at the University of Lisbon: School of Arts and Humanities. He later completed a master's degree in literary theory at the same university. For two years, he served as editor of the book reviews section of the academic journal Forma de Vida. Currently, he works at IPOR-Instituto Português do Oriente, an institute based in Macau that aims to preserve and promote the Portuguese language and culture in the East.
