Training for restorers/conservators for documentary heritage worldwide: Differences – similarities. Comparison of educational training, goals and graduations

The conservation of works of Art include three different fields: preservation, conservation, restoration. Since the safeguarding of documentary heritage lies in the hands of people with different professional trainings (librarians, archivists, restorers, bookbinders, but also chemists, architects or engineers) preservation and conservation methods are dependent to very different points of view. Each of these different professions focus on different aspects for caring for books, archival materials, structures or objects.
This is also reflected in the different structures of conservation training in different countries. Some trainings offer only a theoretical education, others include some or even much practical work on objects besides theoretical teaching.
The paper will compare different training programs for book and paper conservators which exist worldwide.  It will discuss the different goals, the ratio of theory and practice and graduations given at the end.
