ROOTS OF IDENTITY: YEMENI PHOTO EXHIBITION delves into the rich fabric of Yemen's cultural heritage, exploring the intricate threads that have woven the tapestry of its identity throughout history. From traditional practices to contemporary expressions, this exhibition celebrates Yemen's diverse traditions, customs, unique architecture, and artistic practices.

Yemen boasts a long history of artistic expression and a rich cultural heritage. This heritage, rooted in diverse cultures and influences, serves as a foundation and source of identity for individuals and communities alike. This is evident in the diverse elements of identity encountered in daily Yemeni life, such as traditional attire, architectural landmarks, traditional games, handicrafts, music, literature and other cultural and artistic practices.

Utilising conceptual, experimental, documentary, and architectural photography, the photographers in the ROOTS OF IDENTITY: YEMENI PHOTO EXHIBITION aim to present a clear vision of Yemeni identity based on their own understanding. They employ photography to embark on a journey of self-discovery, expressing their ideas and emotions. Their goal is to showcase Yemen's beauty, highlighting its heritage and history as seen by its people, away from the prevailing image of a war-torn and conflict-ridden country.

ROOTS OF IDENTITY: YEMENI PHOTO EXHIBITION is a testament to Yemen's enduring cultural heritage and the resilience of its people. It serves as a reminder of the power of art to transcend conflict and foster understanding, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Yemeni identity.

This project was funded by the EU Delegation to Yemen and implemented by the Goethe-Institut Jordan.
