In Malaysia, the Science Film Festival celebrated it’s 13th edition in hybrid format from October 1 to December 20 with an official selection of 41 films chosen by the Malaysian selection jury. The festival this year is participated by numerous state and national partners such as Association of Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI), Pusat Kokurikulum Negeri Terengganu (PKNT), Pusat Kokurikulum Negeri Selangor, University of Malaya (UM), Sarawak State Library (Pustaka Negeri Sarawak), Haus Kch, Komuniti Filem Titiwangsa (KOMFIT), Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Kota Kinabalu International Film Festival (KKIFF), Borneo Eco Film Festival (BEFF) and PASCH (Schools: Partners for the Future). This year the festival is also supported by Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
In 2023, the Science Film Festival is the official supporting partner of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The theme is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world. The UN Decade runs from 2021 through 2030, which is also the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals and the timeline scientists have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change. Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a global movement, based on a resolution by the UN General Assembly, and coordinated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During the festival period 01 October to 20 December 2023, the 41 films selected by the Malaysian juries are made available on VIMEO and can be accessed by all the festival partners, including the participating schools and members of the public. This year the festival is going hybrid with many planned activities for both online and physical formats.
For the first time, the Science Film Festival in Malaysia will be launched in the East Malaysia on the 25 October 2023 with the collaboration with the Sarawak State Library in Kuching. With the participation of numerous interstate and interdisciplinary partners, the festival this year aims to create meaningful engagement with the target audience all over the country.

Screenings will take place virtually and in presence this year. A total of 41 Science Edutainment Films divided into different age groups will be available for online screening starting 01 October to 20 December 2023.
The Malaysian pre-jury members with expertise in science education and science communication in the participating countries and in-depth knowledge of the local target audience are closely involved in the selection process. All films have English subtitles.

An essential part of the Science Film Festival is curating activities that supplement the themes explored in the films, through hands-on experiments, projects or learning games offered for young audiences at the screenings. Festival partners from all participating countries exchange and adapt ideas for educational activities, which supplement the films at an international workshop and subsequent national workshops. The Science Film Festival offers an effective and enjoyable learning environment though this multidisciplinary approach.
In this section, facilitators, teachers and parents can find activities that connect to early learners, primary and secondary school films at the annual Science Film Festival. These include learning games, projects and hands-on experiments that can be done before or after visiting the festival to enrich the experience.
