This workshop explores the possibilities and complexities of creating participatory and experiential artworks, with particular attention to the relationship between artist, audience, and agency. It asks: What is the invitation? And how much “response-ability” are we willing to give? What happens to authorship when participants bring their own experiences, interpretations, and responses into the work? The session will introduce practical and ethical questions around designing invitations, instructions, interactions, intimacy, spectatorship, co-creation, and the distribution of agency between artist and audience. It will also consider the implications of relinquishing control.
The workshop will begin with a shared exploration of key principles and questions for designing participatory experiences, followed by individual conversations with each collective. These focused sessions will use the framework developed in the first session to examine each project's specific ambitions and develop tailored approaches to audience engagement and participation.
