Aboard "The Conquest of the Improbable"

An evening about the Atmosphere, the Anthropocene and the Seven Seas aboard the raft Conquest of the Improbable.

The Seven Seas.
An evening about the Atmosphere, the Anthropocene and the Seven Seas aboard the raft Conquest of the Improbable.

Listen to the story of scientists and fellow artists!
Facebook knows everything about us, but we know nothing about nature.
What’s in the atmosphere? How are the birds doing?
In the first edition we learned about the arctic, about sea ice, about new polar/grizzly bear breeds, aerosols, and old diseases reappearing out of the ice. Now, we will continue this journey.

The raft “The Conquest of the Improbable” wouldn’t be able to  withstand the rough arctic sea. But it will serve you and fellow  invited artists as the Ark to explore climate change and the arctic nonetheless. The invited scientists and artists to take us in on an truly interdisciplinary discovery journey about the atmosphere and the oceans, the adventure and the cold, about climate change and the Anthropocene.
We will hear of those that travelled the seas, real and imaginary ones. There are seven seas, as everyone knows, and so we will have seven special guests that night.

They are:

It’s rocket science, Ping Wang is doing: she’s using satellite data to research cloud retrievals from oxygen absorption bands. To figure if her satellite’s data is right, she embarked on the research vessel Sonne and sailed from Germany to Argentina.

As a special guest, head scientist of the journey Stefan Kinne from the Max-Planck-Institute Hamburg, from the department atmosphere in the earth-system, will join us as well.

But there were not only scientist aboard the research ship: the  sculptor Lukas Kühne, is turning the experience of the trans-atlantic sail and the scientific data into an immersive sound installation.

Sea heroes! Nothing less than that was Andreas Denk‘s interest when he choreographed the dance performance “Zeehelden” about the magical power of the sea. As a special guest, dancer and sailor Lisa Beese will join us that evening.

Claudius Schulze examined the extend the protection against climate change and natural disasters forms the European landscape. The photographs of ‘State of Nature’ are on show at ARTIS from 1st of February.

We are looking forward to an evening of adventure tales by the heat of the furnace with you.
Bring your own drink and embark on an evening long journey across  the seven seas. There will be adventure, there will be suffering, but most importantly, it will be fun.
