On Gauri Gill:

Delhi-based photographer Gauri Gill is the winner of the Prix Pictet Human in 2023. Gill’s work emphasises her belief in working with and through community, in what she calls ‘active listening’. She has engaged closely over decades with marginalised groups, including rural minorities in the desert of western Rajasthan, Indigenous artists in Maharashtra, immigrants in America and farmers in North India. Working in both black and white and colour, Gill addresses the identity markers of gender, caste, class and community as determinants of mobility and social behaviour; in her work, there is empathy, surprise, and a human concern over issues of survival.

Gill has exhibited in India and internationally. In 2022, her first major survey exhibition opened at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, and travelled to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk in January 2023. Gill’s work has been shown at Tate Modern, London (2025), The Photographers’ Gallery, London (2024), Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai (2024), V&A Museum, London (2023), 58th Venice Biennale (2019), Chobimela, Dhaka (2019), MoMA PS1, New York (2018), Documenta 14, Athens and Kassel (2017), 7th Moscow Biennale (2017), and Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2016), among other places. She has consistently exhibited at locations outside of the art world, including public libraries, rural schools and non-profit institutions. Gill has recently published two books about her multi-year collaborations with Adivasi artists in Maharashtra, India, called Fields of Sight and Acts of Appearance, published by Edition Patrick Frey, Zurich.

On the Portfolio Review

The portfolio review enables six photographers from Thailand to engage in a one-on-one session with Gauri Gill for one hour each. They can discuss about projects the photographers are working on, receive feedback, and ask relevant questions regarding her artistic process and journey.

The review starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM. Each participant will be assigned a one-hour time slot.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

The Portfolio Review takes place within the framework of the Prix Pictet exhibition Human at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, which features Gauri Gill among 12 photographers, as the winner of the tenth cycle of the Prix Pictet Award in 2023. The exhibition is a collaboration with Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Prix Pictet, and the Goethe-Institut Thailand.

The portfolio review is intended for photographers based in Thailand who are engaged in contemporary art photography and are interested in receiving constructive feedback on their work.
