By tuk-tuk to the embassy – a principals’ conference, Thai-style
On Tuesday, 24 March, 2026, the moment had finally arrived - after five years, the Goethe-Institut Thailand and 40 Thai schools offering German as a foreign language renewed their Memoranda of Understanding.
The conference had multiple objectives: to bring together school principlas within the German Language Education Cooperation (BKD); to familiarize them with the diverse work of the Goethe-Institut; and to showcase possible developments in teaching German as a foreign language at their schools. Furthermore, the scope of the current cooperation was to be expanded and strengthened
The day kicked off with a shared German breakfast. This was, of course, not lacking in German bread. It was an intercultural experience that truly went through the stomach. A variety of information booths were set up so that participants could find out more about the work of the Goethe-Institut, our involvement in the BKD, training and study opportunities in Germany, and the prospects for teachers, all in a relaxed atmosphere. The German Embassy was the next stop for the group, who travelled there in ten electric tuk-tuks. The Deputy Ambassador and the Head of the Cultural Section warmly welcomed the school principals and provided an opportunity for stimulating discussion.
Back at the Goethe-Institut, the focus finally turned to the main event of the day. With the participation of the Ministry of Education, 40 Memoranda of Understanding were signed, reaffirming the partnership between the Goethe-Institut Thailand and the participating schools
The day was marked by an interest in the German language and culture, as well as toward the needs of Thai schools and teachers.
It demonstrated that cooperation in the field of German as a foreign language can be dynamic and forward-looking and has sparked enthusiasm for the years ahead.
