University of Bielefeld

Universität Bielefeld

Bielefeld University was established in 1969 as a pioneering institution focused on research, boasting an explicit mandate and exacting standards for research-driven education. Presently, it houses 14 faculties and accommodates around 25,000 students. As a comprehensive university, it offers a diverse array of disciplines encompassing humanities, natural and technical sciences, and medicine. Through CITEC, the research hub for 'Cognitive Interaction Technology' recognized as an excellence cluster in human-machine communication, Bielefeld University spearheads research exploring communication between robots and humans aided by artificial intelligence (CHORUS project). Notable ongoing initiatives include the ESyMath Cluster of Excellence initiative, dedicated to exploring emergent synergies in mathematics. Bielefeld University also holds a prominent scientific presence in biotechnology and chemistry. Strong ties with industries in the East Westphalia region, a pivotal hub for medium-sized industries in Germany, as well as collaborations with global giants such as Honda and Bayer, bridge the gap between applied natural sciences and research. Since 1969, the University has boasted the nation's inaugural and sole Faculty of Sociology, closely intertwined with the renowned Niklas Luhmann and his system theory. It's an unmatched setup in Germany's higher education scene as nowhere else does Sociology wield the institutional autonomy of a dedicated faculty. Bielefeld's Faculty of Sociology ranks among the largest academic institutions in the field. The Faculty of History, tied to the esteemed name of Hans-Ulrich Wehler, commands an excellent reputation as well. As the University of Bielefeld's freshest addition, the Medical Faculty consolidates Germany's most extensive medical landscape, the v. Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel, into a premier university research hub. Additionally, the Bielefeld University Library has consistently clinched top spots across multiple rankings. Encouraging interdisciplinary research and international degree programs, the University offers binational degrees with Université Paris Cité in History and Chemistry, collaborative master's programs in History, Sociology, and Informatics with Università di Bologna, a joint Master of Arts in Literary Studies with 'La Sapienza' in Rome, and a collective Master's program in InterAmerican Studies with the Universidad de Guadalajara. Currently expanding and renovating its campus, the University stands as Germany's largest public construction endeavor in education. Upon completion, it's set to emerge as the country's most cutting-edge campus.
