My name is Sarah Buckliew, and I am the German teacher at River Bluff High School in Lexington, South Carolina. I’m a non-native German speaker, who has been teaching German in South Carolina for 11 years. I went from traditional style teaching to teaching solely based on proficiency. I am the SC-AATG vice president, our GAPP coordinator, and have been awarded the AATG/Goethe-Institut Teacher Certificate of Merit. I teach all levels of German, 1 through AP. At River Bluff, I work across curriculums to see how our German program can work together with other disciplines.

I am a firm believer in life-long learning. It doesn’t matter how many years of teaching experience you have, or if you are a native or non-native speaker, it’s always important to learn best practices and implement new strategies! That’s why I took part in the Goethe-Institut Coaching Program, as a coachee. This year I’m excited to be part of the other end of the program -- as a Goethe coach and a GEM. The coaching cycle gave me new insights and new ideas that I could immediately implement in my teaching and made me a better teacher! With the additional GEM training, I’m excited to share new practices with you and to provide professional development for teachers. I am particularly excited to work on advocacy for German in the U.S. Too often, we German teachers feel like we are alone, but we aren’t! We have a great community of German teachers and wonderful German Goethe-Institut coaches and GEMs to help give you the support that you need. I can’t wait to work with you and share ideas!
