‘Welcome to reaction culture!’ With these words, cultural scientist Annekathrin Kohout greets readers at the beginning of her book Hyperreaktiv (Hyperreactive) and immediately offers herself as a competent guide for a journey through the sometimes adventurous world of modern internet culture. She goes on to examine how social network users deal with the pressure to constantly express their opinions on all kinds of topics, explains what ‘response without speech’ means, and explores the question of whether the ability to communicate pointedly in cynical memes is related to political conviction.
Kohout skilfully combines analysis and anecdotes, while also constantly reflecting on her own dual role as user and observer. What is refreshing is that the author's sincere interest in her research subject is evident throughout. Kohout repeatedly draws on her seemingly endless collection of screenshots, which she has accumulated over the years, to use vivid examples to illustrate how new social dynamics and power relations are emerging online, with effects that extend far beyond the digital realm.
In April 2026, Annekathrin Kohout will be a guest at Meet the Author to present her non-fiction book. In addition to a conversation with Ilva Skulte, associate professor at Rīgas Stradiņa University, the author will also answer questions from the audience. The event will take place online and in German.
