Description

Foreign language instruction has been a compulsory subject at elementary schools since 2005. Where appropriate, it also ties in with multilingualism in families (see "German as a second language") and increasingly with language learning experiences in early childhood education.
A first foreign language is taught primarily in grades 3 and 4, but in some states as early as in grades 1 and 2. An overview of the situation in the different states (Bundesländer) is provided in the report of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.

In the downloads you will find an overview of the following topics:
  1. Objectives in foreign language teaching in primary school
  2. Educational standards
  3. Principles of foreign language didactics
  4. Implementation of methodological principles
  5. Integrated Language Learning (CLIL)
  6. Performance assessment and language portfolio
