About

Modern society is progress-driven and places extreme value on action and productivity. At the same time, the limits of this lifestyle are becoming undeniable. As a counterpoint to progress and movement, standstills have gained particular importance over the last few centuries — they fascinate us and terrify us. This magazine is dedicated to standing still.

STILLSTAND is a continuation of the collaboration between colleagues in Montreal, Munich, New Delhi, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., that began in 2020 with FEHLER, a digital zine celebrating mistakes. For STILLSTAND, colleagues in Boston, Chicago, Guadalajara, Mexico City, San Francisco, and Seattle joined the party. Together with wonderful authors, artists, and partners, this international team filled the STILLSTAND magazine with essays, anecdotes, photography, films, and music that exemplify standstills in all of their many forms.
