Sabine is the project manager of “Your Language Counts!”. She has been working on the idea from the very beginning and brought the project to fruition.

„In many European countries, school classrooms and communities are becoming increasingly diverse. The variety of languages that our pupils bring with them from ‘home’ is an enormous resource that can make a lasting difference in our educational landscape and language learning. With the “Your Language Counts!” project, we want to share good practices with experts and teachers and support educational stakeholders across Europe in offering heritage language teaching in school.“

Magan Tahir teaches Somali as a heritage language — and brings not only linguistic knowledge but also values from his career as a professional table tennis player into the classroom. In this interview, he shares why the word Dhaqan (culture) is so meaningful to him, how speaking their heritage language helps students feel at home, and what inspired him to start teaching.

Position (YLC): Chairperson of OAO - Our partner OAO stands for heritage teachers’ wellbeing and supporting them at work by providing information, courses, opportunities for collaboration and peer-support. The association also works to improve the position of HLT as a subject in the framework of the national core curriculum and the position of the teachers as well.
