“Mauerreise” – the wall in the world project in Cyprus

On 12 and 13 September 2009, Greek and Turkish Cypriot artists, poets and young graffiti artists got together to decorate three wall bricks in the garden of the Goethe-Zentrum in Nicosia, expressing their experiences of living in a divided nation.

During a reception held in the centre’s garden in the evening of 13 September 2009 the bricks were handed over to the German ambassador in Cyprus, Dr Zeitz, for transport back to Berlin. On the Sunday, the public had a chance to watch the artists at work.

From E.KA.TE – the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts – Daphne Trimikliniotis, president of E.KA.TE, and the artists Aristides Anastasiades (Aristis Tasi) and Andreas Kalogirou took part. Georgos Gavriil looked after the Greek Cypriot graffiti artists. EMAA – the European Mediterranean Art Association – was represented by the artists Feridun Isiman, Nilgün Güney and Sifa Alkapon, as well as by Osman Keten, president of the Turkish Cypriot artists’ association, and Eser Keçeci, who took care of the Turkish Cypriot graffiti artists.

Among the participating poets and writers were Christos Hadjipapas, president of the Union of Cyprus Writers, the Greek Cypriot poet Ellie Paeonidou, Zeki Ali, president of the Turkish Cypriot Artists’ and Writers’ Union, and the Turkish Cypriot poet Jenan Selçuk.
