The "Free Hanseatic City of Bremen", with its some 550,000 inhabitants, is Germany's smallest federal state and 10th-largest city. Visitors to the market place of this city, with its long tradition of overseas trade and shipbuilding, can see what is probably the world's oldest statue emblematic of liberty, dating back to 1404: the Roland Statue. In 2004 the imposing Bremen city hall and the Roland Statue were designated as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.
