was born in Berlin in 1938 and studied medicine in Berlin and Munich. He completed the state medical examination in 1966 and qualified as a doctor in 1969. He appeared as an actor on stage and screen from the early 1950s to the early 60s and has worked as a screenwriter, producer and director since 1967, having set up his own company Sentana Filmproduktion with wife Senta Berger in 1965. He has received domestic and international awards for films like O.K. (1970), A TERRIFIC EXIT (SONJA SCHAFFT DIE WIRKLICHKEIT AB, 1973), SUNDAY CHILDREN (SONNTAGSKINDER, 1979), THE WHITE ROSE (DIE WEISSE ROSE, 1982). His 1989 film THE NASTY GIRL (DAS SCHRECKLICHE MÄDCHEN) was nominated for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe and won a Silver Bear in Berlin in 1990 as well as BAFTA Academy Award in 1992. After that, he made MY MOTHER’S COURAGE (MUTTERS COURAGE, 1995), ZIMMER MIT FRÜHSTÜCK (TV, 1999) and ENTHÜLLUNG EINER EHE (TV, 2000).

The film, based on actual events, is about a Vietnamese girl who is kidnapped by four American soldiers, raped, stabbed and finally shot, on November 18th, 1966. Erikson is the fifth soldier. He tries in vain to help the girl, but when he reports the event to his commanding officer, his report is suppressed. Brian De Palma's 1989 film Causalties of War is a remake of Verhoeven's film.
The film o.k. is infamous for the controversy it caused at Berlinale (the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany) in 1970. With an American serving as chairman for the international jury, and accusations of censorship, scandal ultimately caused the festival to break up before it ended that year, and no awards were given.
