Decoder

In an early cyberpunk version of 1980s Berlin, audiophile F.M. (played by F.M. Einheit of the legendary German noise band Einstürzende Neubauten) spends his nights tuned into the peaceful, unobtrusive Muzak played from nearby H Burger restaurants. But when he discovers that it secretly carries subliminal messages encouraging mindless consumption, he teams up with a group of urban pirates (led by Genesis P-Orridge) to spread a musical antidote. Its patrons awakened from their fast-food slumber and on the edge of all-out anti-capitalist insurrection, H Burger headquarters decides to dispatch a special agent to permanently deal with their F.M. problem.

Inspired by a 1970 essay by William S. Burroughs (who also stars in the film) and featuring the music of Soft Cell, Einstürzende Neubauten, and The The, Decoder doubles as a midnight cult gem and an analog-age riot against the encroachment of technology on the autonomy of human desire and perception.
