From 23 March until 3 November 2013, urban development and educational projects will be presented at the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg. “What will future cities look like?” is the question that the IBA 2013 will be addressing. To this end, over 60 projects will be presented from the areas of architecture, energy and education. Central themes will be climate change and the coexistence of different cultures. There will also be three guiding themes wishing to create new spaces on urban wastelands but also focusing on climate protection and new ways of improving the educational situation in urban districts with large migrant populations and helping city-dwellers live side by side in harmony. The projects will be showcased at the Elbe islands of Wilhelmsburg and Veddel in Hamburg and at Harburg Upriver Port. The idea is that the two Elbe islands in particular – socially deprived districts of the city – should profit from unique living spaces and climate-friendly energy sources, thereby making them more attractive. At the beginning of the building exhibition, 46 of the over 60 building projects are complete. The IBA will be accompanied by art projects courtesy of the UK’s Anthony McCall, who will be presenting his light installation Crossing the Elbe, and by the artists’ collective Kommando Himmelfahrt, which uses sounds and projections to bring Thomas More’s novel Utopia to life.
