German Stories on the Big Screen

During the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2021 the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with Frankfurter Buchmesse are inviting you to explore the world of German literature through movies. Under the motto GERMAN STORIES we are showing three films depicting different periods and aspects of German society.

Based on the life of the German poet Friedrich Schiller is the romantic drama BELOVED SISTERS (2014) that tells the true but little-known story of a ménage-à-trois between Schiller and the von Lengefeld sisters, taking us back to the 18th century with a certain lightness. The modernly told period film won the German Film Prize 2015 and several other awards.

Fatih Akin's film adaptation GOODBYE BERLIN of the cult novel “Tschick” (2016) by Wolfgang Herrndorfer is about the two boys Maik and Tschick, who travel across East Germany in a stolen Lada from Berlin in search of Wallachia - a fresh, youthful perspective on the traditional road movie genre.

TRANSIT(2018) by Christian Petzold, one of Germany’s most beloved directors, is based on the same-titled novel from 1942 by Anna Seghers. The film follows a German fugitive who takes on the identity of a dead writer in an attempt to flee the country. When he meets mysterious Marie and falls in love with her, everything changes.

The film screenings are organised by the Goethe-Institut and the Frankfurter Buchmesse in cooperation with Cinema Space. They are supported and brought to you in cooperation with the Arabic Languace Center/Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi.
