Director: Karen Winther
Documentary, Norway, Germany, Sweden, 2018
In her film “Exit”, the director recounts her own past as a supporter of a right-wing extremist organisation in Norway. The plot doesn't remain restricted on her own structure. Karen Winther travels to the USA, among other places, and meets women who were also active in right-wing extremist circles. She shows her encounters with a former left-wing extremist activist and an ex-jihadist who served a sentence in a Paris prison. Besides surprisingly similar motivations and experiences, all share difficulties connected with their "exits" such as feelings of guilt, but also threats of still active members.
In 2018, “Exit” was awarded the Documentary Film Prize of the Goethe-Institut.
