documenta in Kassel, Germany, is one of the largest and most important contemporary art exhibitions in the world. The exhibition takes place every five years, with each edition led by a different internationally recognised Artistic Director. documenta16 will take place from June 12 until September 19, 2027 and will be curated by Naomi Beckwith and will be curated by Naomi Beckwith, currently Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Through its activities as a registered Australian not-for-profit organisation, The Friends of Goethe Australia complement the work of the Goethe-Institut by providing opportunities for young Australians to advance their careers.

For 2027, we offer a 4–6-week work experience placement at documenta16, between July and September, for an emerging professional working in the visual arts in Australia. The successful application will be supporting the documenta16 team at the Live Arts program and similar performances and artistic events.

Applications should bring a demonstrated background in contemporary visual art, the ability to contribute meaningfully to the team, and a willingness to engage actively in all aspects of the placement.

The successful applicant will receive a stipend of A$ 10,000 to cover travel, accommodation and living expenses. While German language proficiency is not strictly necessary, the Goethe-Institut Australia offers a free language course (digital or in-person) as part of the package.

If this interests you, we’d love to hear from you! Please submit your application below until 31.10.2026, including your resumé and a one-page (maximum 500 words) cover letter outlining why this opportunity resonates you, and how it would enhance your professional career and what you hope to contribute to the documenta16 team.
