It is our great pleasure to invite you to join the National Sustainable Living Festival, the Transitions Film Festival, and the Goethe-Institut Australien for a FREE live screening of the feature film: ECOCIDE at RMIT’s iconic Capitol Theatre in Melbourne’s CBD.

ECOCIDE is a philosophical thriller that puts Germany on trial for its insufficient action on preventing climate chaos.

Set in 2034, we enter a world besieged by the dramatic effects of the climate catastrophe; droughts and floods have already destroyed the livelihoods of millions of people. After the third storm surge in a row, The Hague International Court of Justice relocates provisionally to Berlin, where the climate crisis is to become the subject of a sensational court case.

Two lawyers (Nina Kunzendorf und Friederike Becht) are set to bring a claim for damages against the Federal Republic of Germany, representing 31 countries of the global South. The case deals with questions about the economic and ecological responsibilities of developed nations, as well as whether we have the right to an unspoilt natural world. Put plainly: it is about how and whether the global community should be held accountable to reliably guarantee the livelihood of certain citizens.

High-ranking political and industry representatives are summoned as witnesses for this ground-breaking fictitious case. The court must decide whether the German government can be held responsible for its climate protection failure, which would set an explosive precedent.

ECOCIDE presents us with a courtroom drama on the climate crisis that is as quiet as it is spectacular, representing a poingant diagnosis of the present, viewed through the flame gilt magnifying glass of the future. The film’s director, Andres Veiel, and his co-author Jutta Doberstein decipher how political decisions based on lobbyism in our present and recent past are robbing the world of its future opportunities, shifting masterfully between docu-drama and fictional documentary.

The free film screening on Sunday 20th February 2022 at RMIT’s iconic Capitol Theatre will also feature an interview with acclaimed director Andres Veiel.

ECOCIDE will also be screening as part of The Transitions Film Festival Online Program from Feb 18 – March 13 2022.
