The roots of Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra can be traced back as far as 1479, making it one of the world’s oldest and most distinguished orchestras. This concert tour is a unique opportunity to hear eight of its members in intimate chamber music settings in Australia. Curated by violist and member of the orchestra, Tahlia Petrosian, the group will perform a carefully selected program, contextualised by talks and workshops in Australia.

In Adelaide, the musicians will perform a repertoire that explores ‘The Relevance of Cultural Tradition in the 21st Century’ at UKARIA Cultural Centre, bringing together the international musicians with the next generation of Australian performers from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). This weekend of exhilarating performances, exchanges and discussions is particularly significant to UKARIA founder, Ulrike Klein AO, who established the centre to inspire people through culture. In 2023, she celebrates 40 years in Australia and her 80th birthday in June.

In Melbourne and Sydney, the Gewandhaus Orchestra musicians will perform an enthralling program of music by Franz Schubert. The ‘Moments Musicaux’ – beloved miniatures for solo piano – will be heard in arrangements by Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen, writing for the rich instrumental line-up of Schubert’s Octet. In both cities, the musicians will additionally hold masterclasses and run workshops at the respective Conservatoria of music.
