Film archive
Films can be researched and rented for use in cultural and educational mediation via the Goethe-Institut's film catalogue. Our collection currently comprises more than 550 films with active licences in the following formats: Digital Film, DVD, and Blu-ray. All films are available in their original-language versions and include subtitles in English, French, and, in almost all cases, German.
Our film collection includes works from the early days of German cinema through to contemporary German productions. Educational and cultural institutions in Canada may borrow the films free of charge for non-commercial purposes. Films cannot be loaned to individuals.
The physical copies—approximately 400 DVDs and Blu-rays—are held at the Goethe-Institut Montreal. Our collection currently comprises more than 550 films with active licences in the following formats: Digital Film, DVD, and Blu-ray. Please note that our DVDs are in PAL format and require a PAL or multi-format DVD player. Digital screeners and movie links can be requested and sent via email.
All films are available in their original-language versions and include subtitles in English, French, and, in almost all cases, German.
In the online catalogue, each film is accompanied by a brief synopsis as well as information on its thematic, stylistic, and historical context. These catalogue texts may be used free of charge for programme announcements and are available in both German and English.
We also offer the following services:
- Film recommendations for retrospectives or for programmes focusing on a particular theme or person, such as a filmmaker or actor
- Film screenings in the multimedia space/screening room of the Goethe-Institut Montreal (digital film, DVD and BluRay)
- Rentals of the Goethe-Institut's multimedia space/screening room
