Located in the heart of the city, the Goethe-Institut Toronto is the meeting point and partner for anyone who is interested in contemporary German art and culture as well as the German language. In 2022, together with the institutes in Montréal and Ottawa, we celebrated our 60th anniversary in Canada.

Located in the heart of the city, the Goethe-Institut Toronto is the meeting hub and partner for anyone who is interested in contemporary German art, culture, and language.

We offer online language courses and in-person examinations for beginners and advanced learners. In our fully-equipped multimedia library, we provide materials on the German language and culture. Everyone has free access to our Media Lounge and is invited to our numerous cultural events.

For those outside of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, we offer special online courses as well as examinations centres with our partners in Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Worldwide, the Goethe-Instituts’ language-learning system is modeled after the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for language acquisition. We also connect adults and youth with courses at our institutions in Germany.

A high quality of standards and topicality in our teaching methods are important to us. As a result, we offer a variety of extensive workshops, teacher training seminars and stipendiums for Canadian teachers of German as a foreign language at schools and universities in five provinces: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Along with the cultural program of the Educational Services, we inspire students to learn German, especially at our partner schools.

Through a spectrum of cultural events, the Goethe-Institut has been leading continuous dialogue and cultural exchanges between German and Canadian artists over more than 60 years, presenting the latest arts and ideas from Germany and a contemporary look at the country. We work together with artists and experts in film, new media, visual arts, theatre, dance, music, literature, architecture, design and more.

Most of our events take place at our Goethe Space, with special events such as our signature film series GOETHE FILMS @ TIFF Lightbox or “Goethe at TIFA” happening at our Canadian partner venues.

Goethe Space

The Goethe Space is the Goethe‑Institut Toronto’s flexible cultural studio—an architecturally distinctive venue designed for contemporary art, dialogue, and experimentation. Created with Entro Design, the space embodies adigital natureconcept: a living plant wall brings organic texture into a technologically advance environment equipped with an 8K media wall, adaptable lighting, video conferencing and XR options. The result is a welcoming, future‑oriented framework for artistic encounters and public exchange.

As a core site for the Institut’s exhibitions and events, the Goethe Space hosts CONTACT Photography Festival Core Exhibitions, film screenings, readings, panels, and hands‑on workshops. Past programs have featured artists such as Zun Lee, whose street photography portraiture offers an intimate counter‑narrative to institutional erasure, or Sibylle Fendt, whose documentary work explored care, migration, and resistance. These projects exemplify the Space’s commitment to presenting socially engaged, internationally relevant perspectives.
