Franz Kafka
Die Zeichnungen

It was only in 2019 that over 100 drawings by Franz Kafka, which had been kept under lock and key in a Zurich bank safe for decades, emerged: a sensational discovery. Until then, only a few drawings by the world-famous writer were known. They are pictures of almost irresistible appeal. Kafka's artistic ambitions and his extraordinary talent can only be appreciated with these new finds. They are published here for the first time, together with the already known works.

Especially in his early years, between 1901 and 1907, Kafka drew intensively. An entire booklet of drawings has now come to light alongside dozens of individual sheets. The figures we encounter here are fragile, unstable and at the same time enigmatically fascinating. Kafka's drawings veer from the realistic into the fantastic, the grotesque, sometimes even the uncanny or the carnivalesque. Together they reveal a second Kafka alongside the writer. In this volume, with its brilliant reproductions and illuminating explanations, he can be discovered in full for the first time.
