Kirill Petrenko conducts Schumann, Zimmermann and Brahms

The programme opens with Robert Schumann’s (1810 – 1856) Manfred Overture, a dramatic portrait of Byron’s tormented hero. Its sharp contrasts and emotional tension set the tone for the night.

Albrecht Mayer then performs Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s (1918 – 1970) Oboe Concerto. Zimmermann mixes neoclassical clarity, serial structures, jazz references and musical collage. The concerto is bold, unconventional and technically demanding.

The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms’ (1833 – 1897) Symphony No. 1. After years of searching for his own symphonic voice, Brahms created a work that defined his place in tradition. The symphony moves from sombre intensity to radiant resolution and remains a cornerstone of the orchestral repertoire.
