Sir Simon Rattle and Janine Jansen

In the 2025/26 season, violinist Janine Jansen is Artist in Residence with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. She opens her residency with Sergei Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto, conducted by Simon Rattle. Completed in 1917, the same year as his Symphonie classique (Symphony No. 1, 1917), the concerto blends lyrical beauty with sharp modern edges. Its unusual structure slow outer movements framing a fast scherzo shows Prokofjew’s inventive approach to tradition.

John Adams’ Harmonielehre (1985) returns to the Philharmoniker 40 years after its premiere. The piece transforms Minimal Music with impressionistic colors and late-Romantic gestures, a hallmark of Adams’ style. Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy rounds out the program, bringing English folk song into the concert hall.
