In 1926, the Bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau, entering its most influential and productive period. Fast forward one hundred years, Bauhaus is inescapable across Africa - from Addis Abeba to Bujumbura, from Maputo to Luanda, and from Accra to Casablanca or Douala to Bukavu.

It has become a global phenomenon, and the legacies of the Bauhaus movement and Classical Modernism  remain apparent across the world.

In October 2026, the Goethe-Institut Äthiopien will present a photography exhibition at the Gebre Kristos Desta Modern Art Museum featuring works by the Berlin-based photographer Jean Molitor.
As a freelance photographer, Jean Molitor has traveled extensively around the world, particularly throughout Africa, documenting architecture, everyday life, and landscapes.

The exhibition focuses on his work documenting Bauhaus architecture in Germany and various African countries and is linked to the 100 Years of the Bauhaus anniversary in Germany.

This exhibition brings together architectural details from the Bauhaus tradition that originated in Weimar with the modernist architecture of central Addis Ababa placing them within the broader context of contemporary buildings across Africa.

The exhibition’s thematic focus is the architecture of Classical Modernism and the documentation of buildings in all their diversity and aesthetic richness. At the same time, these images serve as historical records of ever-evolving urban environments and draw attention to architectural heritage.

Opening Hours:
