Founded in 1558 as royal court library of the house of Wittelsbach, the Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) today is one of the prime European State Libraries and known as an important international research facility. The library is holding about 10 million volumes, 63,000 current periodicals in electronic and printed form and 97,000 manuscripts.
Its collection profile is characterised by extremely precious autographs, rare books and comprehensive special collections representing thousands of years of cultural heritage. For example, the Bavarian State Library is holding one of the largest European collections of Chinese works originating before 1900.
At the same time, the library is rising to the challenges of the future: The Bavarian State Library is continuously enhancing digital and Internet-based services, for example in the area of mass digitisation as well as with the development of innovative digitisation technologies. With one million digitised objects, the Bavarian State Library is holding the largest digital repository of all German libraries.
Dr. Tabery, Deputy Head of the Oriental and Asia Department in the Bavarian State Library, München, will present an overview of the precious Chinese collection, the digitisation strategy and some of the latest innovative user scenarios of the Bavarian State Library at the Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province.
