Subsequent film screening: The Helper (2017) . with English subtitles. 107 mins
The Helper Documentary chronicles diverse stories from Hong Kong’s domestic worker community, uncovering the inspiring combination of grit, pride and determination that drives them.
Migrant domestic helpers are an incredibly important part of how Hong Kong functions as a city, empowering massive numbers of women to return to the workforce after having a family, but often they are dismissed as somewhat second class citizens within society. My goal with this film in exploring their stories of maternal sacrifice and struggles is to humanize these women to the population at large and simultaneously celebrate their tenacity, strength of character and indefatigable outlook on life.
– Joanna Bowers, Director
“the film remains an honest and heartfelt portrait of an incredibly challenging lifestyle. As The Unsung Heroes take to the stage for their climactic show, only the hardest of hearts will remain unmoved.” SCMP
The Helper made its Hong Kong debut on Mothers Day, 14th May 2017, and it has been released internationally on 24th July 2018
